Markdown Toolbox

A suite of Markdown tools for editing and converting files, plus a blog of Markdown guides. For writers, developers, and content creators.

Markdown Toolbox

Markdown Toolbox is a free collection of tools for working with Markdown: editing it, generating it, and converting it into almost any other format. It also has a library of guides that answer everyday Markdown questions.

What it does

Generate Markdown. Build a table in an editable grid and copy it out as a Markdown table, or put together a Markdown link without remembering the syntax.

Convert Markdown to other formats. One Markdown file can become:

  • Documents: HTML, PDF, EPUB, LaTeX, reStructuredText, AsciiDoc, and DocBook.
  • Presentations: PowerPoint (PPTX), Reveal.js, DZSlides, S5, Slidy, and Slideous.
  • Wikis and notes: MediaWiki, DokuWiki, Jira wiki, XWiki, ZimWiki, Emacs Org mode, and Haddock.
  • Images: a rendered page as a PNG or JPG.

Work with files. Split a long Markdown file into pieces, or combine several files into one.

How it works

Simple tools run entirely in your browser. Format conversions run on a small server I wrote in Go that drives Pandoc, the standard document converter. PDFs go through LaTeX, and image output uses a headless HTML renderer. Uploaded files are deleted as soon as the conversion finishes.

The site is available in several languages and is built with Global Sites AI, my boilerplate for translated static sites.

Guides

The Markdown Toolbox blog has more than 300 short guides, such as how to add an image caption or how to choose a Markdown editor. Each one answers a single question with an example you can copy.

Launch note

From the original announcement, November 2023: "I'm working on a new site... I'm adding a series of tools for working with Markdown. Also blog posts that I hope will be helpful." Both halves grew far beyond that first version.
