About Maddox Labs
Hi, I'm Ben Maddox, a software developer. Maddox Labs is where I have shared my side projects since 2005.
This site is the home for everything I build on my own time: small web tools, browser games, services for website owners, and experimental software.
How it started
I started making computer games at 13. A few of those early Windows games are still on the downloads page, and my old browser game site, Rootbeer Games, is still online too. Since then I have worked professionally as a developer, mostly in C#, TypeScript, and SQL. The earliest posts on the blog date to 2012 and cover that work: unit testing, WPF, and team practices.
What I build now
- Focused web tools. Single-purpose sites that do one job well, like converting HEIC, AVIF, and WEBP images, CSV and JSON, or counting and comparing text. In 2024 I also bought four existing tool sites and have been improving them.
- Services for site owners. Site by Email builds and maintains small business websites, updated by email. Is Site Down? checks outages from several regions.
- Games. Since 2026 many of my games are built with Stasis Lang, a language I am developing for deterministic games. They range from tiny games that fit in a few kilobytes to Gambit Guard, a chess-based maze-defense game.
- Code. Data Access Generation, a patent-pending code generator, is in use in production.
The projects page lists everything, grouped by category.
How this site is funded
Some pages show Google AdSense ads, and a few links are affiliate links. The home page and the toddler games never show ads. The privacy policy explains what that means for cookies and data.
